ABOUT ME

Landscape 06 GSP-DSC05768-Salton Sea Amethyst

“Salton Sea Dawn”, above – A morning sky with the blue-violets of early dawn. The night and its stars fading, Venus rising, daytime approaching. Your eyes drift slowly down into shades of apricot and amber beyond the low-lying mountains in the distance. Reflections of orange and lavender in the still waters of the Salton Sea mirror the colors above, as the eyes continue to move lower to engage with the darker shoreline. On the left, dual reflections of humanity’s presence subtly remind me that I’m not alone. This image flows from my ongoing search for calming landscapes combined with often startling colors, reflections, and emotional resonance.

As a child, living in Los Angeles, I was an actor, helping to spark my creative interests. Later, as a teenager living in a small mountain town in California’s Sierra National Forest, I discovered the brilliant night skies, helping spark my interest in astronomy, science and nature, and a later interest in planning for and pursuing total solar eclipses around the world. Fortunately, creativity, planning, and science combined match well with pursuing photography.

My time spent over the last 30+ years traveling globally, and inspired by iconic photographers such as Ansel Adams, or more contemporary figures such as Jeff Mitchum, has led me to focus my photography on landscape and travel images, while also chasing the sky. My process begins with understanding what I want a final image to be, or at least how it should feel. In thinking about what I imagine, I consider the season, weather, lighting, time of day, and location, while remaining flexible to adapt when conditions shift or an unexpected opportunity arises. It’s important to wait for the right moment yet recognize the compelling instances when the scene offers something beautiful, yet different. Hopefully, the final image will fit my original intent, but if not, I’ll wait for future opportunities – opportunities that are sometimes only hours or days away, but that are sometimes years apart – I do believe that patience is a virtue.

Ultimately my images are designed for fine art enthusiasts that seek high-quality prints for their homes, offices, or art collections. They are sold in limited editions or sets, and subject to tailored sizing. Recent projects include Australian landscapes, Parisian cityscapes, and African wildlife. Upcoming projects include Joshua Tree National Park; the U.K., Ireland and Iceland; the Eastern Mediterranean; and the Kimberly in Northwestern Australia.
